PROTOTIPOS MONUMENTA
Role: Art Conception, Motion & Graphic Design
Client: Yapci Ramos & Dicky Morgan
'Monumenta', crafted by Canarian artist Yapci Ramos stands as an installation of 9 life-sized scultures, that symbolize women from the pre-colonized Guanche community inhabiting the Canary Island. During its showcase at La Ermita San Miguel in San Cristóbal de La Laguna end of 2023, the artist collaborated with Dicky Morgan shop to curate an event, 'Prototipos Monumenta', giving the opportunity to understand and delve deeper into the entire process of creation and production of this work. This unique occasion provided an immersive exploration into the comprehensive journey of conceptualization and production behind Ramos's compelling work.
I've been tasked with crafting an animated poster adaptable for both digital display and physical distribution. Drawing inspiration from the 3D renderings of the sculptures, I employed a sketchy, prototyped texture to imbue them with a distinctive aesthetic. By animating these elements, I fashioned a digital zoetrope effect, resulting in nine unique iterations of the poster.
"Monumenta 'Nine Guanche Incarnations' gives visibility to the forgotten Guanche women and questions the forms of representation of the precolonial past from a contemporary perspective. After observing different monuments, I undertake a historical analysis to solve the underlying mysteries of the underrepresentation of these subaltern identities. Guanche women occupied a place as active subjects in the communities of pre-Hispanic Tenerife. With colonialism, the aboriginal society became regulated by patriarchal premises that perpetuated certain narratives while invisibilizing others, thus leading to the forgetting of alterity. Through artistic, historical, and social research, nine identities are developed inspired by the landscapes of each of the ancient demarcations of the island, its ancestral culture, and oral tradition."
